Itinerary description
With its iconic pyramidal shape, Baula is one of the most beautiful mountains in Iceland. I climbed the peak in March, at the end of the winter. I parked the car by the road in the signed parking area. I first walked north along the river and then turned slowly to north-east to meet the north-west edge of the mountain. From that point the slope turns very steep and you just need to climb straight up along the edge to the summit. In this time of the year the peak was completely covered with hard snow and ice so I needed to use crampons, an ice axe and a helmet due to the extremely slippery conditions (the last 50-60 meters was a continuous block of ice) and the very steep slope.
To climb this peak in winter conditions can be dangerous if you don´t have enough experience using ice gear, even though it's just 934 m high. However, I have read that this hike is much easier in summer time, being the loose rocks covering the slopes the only difficulty.
There is a nice waterfall you can see if you continue north following the river. It´s only few hundreds of meters far from the main route.
