Itinerary description
Among the Idaho 12ers, this is the only one that provides a nice, scenic climb on a ridge and steady calls 3 climbing on decent rock.
Depending on the capabilities of the vehicle, there is a suitable camping spot at 8000 feet. Getting there requires a high clearance vehicle and 4-wheel drive. Going further up the road requires an ATV.
After leaving the road the trail reaches a wooded area. The trail becomes faint, but the idea is to traverse the slope leaving the high point to the left. Eventually reach the saddle behind.
A clear trail gets to 11000 feet, easy going. At that point there is clambering over rocks all the way to the summit. The climbing is forgiving, easy to find class 3 terrain. The hardest spot is probably a 30 feet wall close to the start.
The access road is bad. Take Pass Creek, and about 2 miles from the highway there is a creek crossing to the right. Follow the road (240) to a fork with road 835 to the left. The road becomes steadily worse from then. Then road 796 goes straight up the ridge, as far as you feel comfortable.
