Itinerary description
Start the hike by crossing Occidental Highway and walk up through a gated community. From here you can simply follow the road as it winds up the mountain or you can take several short cuts that go straight up to the antennas. We chose to go straight up because it saved us a lot of time and distance but it was much steeper.
From the antennas, we hiked over several hills toward the Rucu Pichincha trail. This was by far the hardest part of the hike as the hills were long and steep. On the final hill leading up to the Pichicha trail, we decided to hike straight up rather than take the trail that connected with the main trail further back before the bear cave. Instead we came out on the trail very close to the cave on the Pichincha trail. We then simply followed the main trail to the summit of Rucu and then came down the mountain via the route to the Teleferico.
It was not a technical climb but it was long and required some level of endurance. As always in Ecuador, make sure to pack multiple layers. Plan to spend anywhere from 6-10 hours on the route depending on physical condition.
