Observations: climbing with a guide is only mandatory if you are not federated

*****************************************

Route through the Slovak High Tratras, specifically reaching the highest peak. In our case we hire a mountain guide, but it is possible to reach the summit without a guide as long as you are federated or are a guide in another country.

0:00 The guide takes us by vehicle to the Sliezsky hotel next to Lake Velické, otherwise we would have to walk up the paved road from the town of Tatranská Polianka since there is no possibility of taking a taxi either.

From the hotel we walk along the left bank of Lake Velické, crossing a part of the Velická valley. We pass next to a waterfall and abandon the path to take another unmarked one that will take us to the top of the Tatras.

0:45 After walking through a small field we approach the walls of the peak and next to a narrow channel the first staples and nails appear; first equipped section in which the guide secures us with a rope.

Up to the hill, the path quickly gains height through some small climbs, equipped passes and stretches of vertical path. All this without any type of technical difficulty, beyond physical condition.

2:05 We reach a small hill with a very aerial atmosphere, but without much exposure, from where we can see spectacular views of both the Velická valley and the southern foothills of the Tatras.

We continue along an unmarked but very intuitive path. We still can't see the top, something jealous that doesn't let us see it until we are right under it.

This section, until reaching the base of the summit, is a curious up and down through narrow channels, with small climbs and descents, some equipped with staples, nails and/or chains. This section is not very difficult, but you have to swim carefully.

3:05 Once at the base of the peak, we see the summit and from this point on it is all uphill, without any major complexity.

3:35 We reach the top of Gerlachovský, crowned by a metal cross. So far with 3 guides plus those at the top with clients. We take some photos, eat something and begin the descent as new, very large groups begin to arrive and the summit is not all that big.

4:05 We begin the descent, which we will do through the Batizovská valley to make the route circular and more complete.

The descent is easy, but you have to be careful because it is quite slippery, to which is added the lot of people coming down, many of them very impatient.

This descent must be done carefully since the channel is a small funnel of more than 1 km that gradually narrows until reaching a couple of points where you have to climb down several walls equipped with staples and chains. These climbs are simple, but we must not forget that they are steps equipped with the risk that this entails.

5:30 We reach the base of this long canal until we join a well-marked and easy-to-follow path.

We continue the descent towards Lake Batizovské. Shortly before reaching it, the guide stops to talk to what looks like a park ranger. Then he tells us that, in fact, it is a guard who is asking people if they are going with a guide or if they are federated, otherwise they will fine, so it is better to have chosen the guide option.

6:20 We reach the lake and skirt it along the left bank until we join the path marked with red marks that we must follow until we reach the Sliezsky hotel.

The path to the hotel is simple and at times a bit heavy, it is surrounded by scrubland without large trees and goes around the entire southern slope of Gerlachovský.

7:15 After almost an hour we reached the hotel, where before going down to Tatranská Polianka we had a good Kofola.
