Itinerary description

An exciting scramble ending an impressive walk below the Alport Castles areas, great fun in any weather.

Grade: 1

The Start
After parking up at an appropriate spot near the Alport Bridge, cross the road and go through the gate, following the hill upward and left until you gain the path to Alport Farm

The Route
The route follows the path to Alport Farm, taking the small gate that faces towards the Castles, crossing the bridge at the river, and making your way along the path towards the base of Alport Castle.

Instead of following the path towards the right, cross the fence at the corner on the left, and follow the rock fall to the base of Alport Castle, making your way to the Tower.

The Scramble
This is where you can pick your route to ascend the mighty tower. The easiest route, for the Grade 1 is to take the gap in between the Tower and it’s smaller cousin, and then climb the grassy slope on the west facing side, taking the optional gully towards the top.

However there is an interesting looking chimney on the castles side, which could be a very interesting way up!

To finish you can walk up to the top of the Castles, and link with any other walk, or return to the car for a quick finish!

A classic Peak District scramble, well worth a visit if you can get there!

Alternate finish - grade 2, potentially grade 3

Upper section of scramble is potentially grade 3 and have no escape We've taken route marked in photo, but we haven't followed any guide book - beware! Last boulder marked with arrow is a bit sketchy - it has good handholds, but is very tall and we had to lean back to pull ourselves to the top!
