Kilimanjaro, Northern Circuit. Day 7: Kibo Hut - Uhuru Peak - Millenium camp
Saturday, October 12, 2019
Departure / Arrival: Kibo Hut (4,700 m) / High, Millenium Camp (3,825 m)
Duration: 11 hours (Departure 00:10 - Arrival 11:15)
Highlight: Uhuru Peak (5,895 m)
Distances and cumulative slope: 15 km, + 1,200 m / - 2,100 m
Difficulty: 4/5
Complete crossing: 2019.10.06-13 - Kilimanjaro, Northern Circuit (8 days)
Seventh day of expedition, ascent to Uhuru Peak (5,895 m) .
Do not walk around the bush: the mountain is not given to anyone. And to the agencies that sell you that "go up the Kilimanjaro, which is an easy mountain," I would say nothing further from the truth. Less, when you have the worst day regarding the weather!
At 11:30 p.m., as we had agreed, they come to wake us up in the store. The backpacks are ready, the petates that at eight o'clock the porters will take to the next camp as well, so in 10 min we are having tea and at midnight we leave the base camp. In front of the barracks, in the center of Kibo Camp, a Friday night agitation reigns: mountaineers busy checking their backpack, others grouped out, headlamp on the head. We pass in front of them and continue on our way to the mountain. In the sky, an almost full moon shines among the clouds and constellations that, from home, we are accustomed to observe in the opposite direction. The thermometer marks two degrees above; We are surprised that it is not so cold.
The oblique path to the right and quickly slopes. Even the Gilman's Point, a thousand meters above us, will not give up on the climb. Better to have acclimatized well the previous days. At Gilman's Point we pause for a ginger tea. During the ascent, the fog has trapped us and the temperature has dropped sharply, causing the humidity with the wind to instantly freeze over everything that is found. Icicles and ice balls hang from the mustache, eyelashes, any piece of clothing or backpacks.
After the Gilman's Point the road is lost in the fog and we must go back to find the road, hidden under the snow. We make a second stop at Stella Point, where we wrap ourselves against the rock wall. I notice how my legs loose; they shiver of cold and tiredness. We drink another hot tea and return to the pace of our breathing. On the left, where only fog is visible, the glaciers that we have seen so many times in photographs should be, while the crater, majestic, must be on the bottom right. At 6 o'clock we finally reached the summit of Uhuru Peak, at an altitude of 5,895 meters. We are happy, but also exhausted. Unfortunately, the wind and fog will not let us immortalize the moment: frozen cameras, frozen mobiles ... From now on we must remember the moment in the privacy of our memory.
A few minutes pass when other mountaineers begin to appear, some with their faces undone. This mountain gives nothing away!
We let some more time go by to make sure that the weather doesn't really offer any windows but in the end, stunned by the wind, we begin the descent towards Millenium Camp. The gusts push us sideways so, tired of the effort, we decided to pause halfway at Barufo Camp to buy juices and bread and regain strength. The fog will haunt us until almost entering Millenium Camp, shortly after 11 in the morning.
Stretched comfortably in the store, we seem to have been beaten. We are happy to have reached our goal, but disappointed that we were unable to enjoy the views that we had thought so much before embarking on the road. Here, at least, we will be able to talk with the family and share our feelings in the heat and protection of our home ...
