Day 1:
Over the cobblestones of old Gjirokaster we descend to Drino valley, where we follow some dirt roads before starting a longer but beautiful asphalt climb up to the days highest point, the 1300m high “Cajupi field”. Time for a lunch with local shepherds – all homemade & fresh. After lunch it gets a bit rocky – asphalt has come to an end and we bike a 4x4 track instead – mainly downhill into the “Zagoria” valley. Later afternoon we reach the village of Nderan, where we enjoy dinner, night and hospitality of a local guesthouse.
Day 2:
After a complete breakfast we start today’s journey back to Gjirokastra, which leads through remote landscapes and over various attractions. A monument from communist times, a wild waterfall in a canyon, a century old stone bridge – and more. Some uphill and lots of downhill – a joy! Close to the Greek border we dive into a deep canyon, where we enjoy lunch in a small restaurant with adjacent waterfall. Second half of the day leads us over farmland dirt roads and a little asphalt back to Gjirokaster.
