Itinerary description
This starts from Woodhaugh gardens from the north end of Dunedin. There are other places to start including from the bottom of switchback track. Go up Malvern Street for about 2.5kms. On the way up I took a track along the left bank of the leith river only to find a "no mountain-bike" sign at the end. Stay on the road.
You take switchback track on the left right after a small bridge. The track climbs reasonably gently and gets more technically difficult as you go up. While it's quite a decent climb (400 meters or thereabout; NOT 1700 METERS!), there's lots to concentrate on and enjoy. This is quite a building and digging feat! The track can be quite narrow and with trees to duck under and some roots, this is an intermediate + track. The last few 100 meters to get to swampy summit are pretty much bike carrying time and make for an advanced/expert downhill ride. At the top you can join other tracks from there. See more details below.
The downhill is fun but this is a two-way and very narrow track. Control is key.
I did this after a long period of dry weather and this was great. After rain, this could be another matter. In fact, there should be no riding there after substantial rain as it can seriously damage the track.
