Itinerary description
Circling around Ha gorges, starting the ascent from Kavousi and turning right at Panagia to reach Tsamantis before Thripti. The dirt road is in relatively good shape and can be followed by a 4 wheel vehicle (otherwise you risk the engine bottom).
I'll note an unforeseen difficulty. When leaving the valley of Melisses down in the valley (which a local named the Dead Tourist valley), I thought that reaching the col above would give direct access to the area of Thripti, and my disappointment was substantial when I discovered that the col was not near Thripti at all, and that reaching Thripti necessitated an unforeseen descent into another valley, which also means an unexpected long ascent with hardly any shade, and I got some nasty sunburn as a result...
Worth to note, you need a lot of water if you do this on a mtb (I consumed 5 liters and was dried up when reaching Thripti where a taverna can save you). From Thripti downwards there is an asphalt road down to Kato Chorio where my garmin gps went empty (I started from Ierapetra and took more than 5 hours to reach that point).
I got a flat tire reaching Kavousi, so do not neglect spare parts: the stones and local spines are sharp...
