The Trnovo Forest is a karst plateau that extends in Slovenian territory from about 800 m above sea level in the town of Trnovo up to the highest point, namely Mount Mali Golak at 1495 m. Being a karst area, it has no surface water but is full of caves, abysses, chasms and typical karst formations such as furrowed fields (karren), shower grooves, corrosion tanks and the like.
Among the most relevant karst phenomena we should mention the Great Ledenica ice cave located in the Paradana Nature Reserve. 385 m deep and 1550 m long, it has acquired worldwide fame for the presence of perennial snow and ice and for the inversion of vegetation in the entrance cone. In the past, the ice blocks extracted from this cavity were even exported to Egypt. There are two nature reserves: Paradana and Mount Golaki with Smrekova draga and the natural monument Smrečje.
The Trnovo Forest is almost totally covered by woods where the prevalent trunk is beech (65-67%) followed by silver and spruce fir. In 1700 the India Company obtained the timber for the construction of ships. Today the exploitation of the forest is regulated and respect for the environment is maximum. Meadow areas are very rare: the Lokve valley and the surroundings of Trnovo dedicated to grazing and Mala Lazna . In such a vast forest, the presence of the bear is a constant and some studies have also revealed the presence of the wolf.
The entire area is crossed by a dense network of forest roads (120km!) which allows you to reach the most beautiful and characteristic places of this magnificent forest, constantly protected by green tunnels which offer comfort during the summer season. The considerable extension of the forest, the very little anthropization and the scarcity of points of reference will be accomplices of a feeling of solitude which will be strongly felt in several points.
If at the end of the tour you want to stop and taste the home-made dishes (game, home-made bread and other specialties), Lokve, Lazna and the Iztokova Koča refuge on the slopes of Golaki will be a temptation for anyone.
In short, the Trnovo Forest is the ideal place to re-oxygenate and a true paradise for those who love hiking and "do-it-yourself" tourism.
