Itinerary description
MTB ride in foothills of Erymathos mountain range, starting from Parapeiros Dam.
First short section on asphalt for not more than 2k, before turning left with dirt road in direction to Kalousi. This seemed like an ol asphald road that collapsed in time an became dirt road, but still wide and in very good shape. The grades here were a bit surprising and my gravel bike ratio was not the best (that is one of the reasons I mark this as MTB, not gravel. Yes, I did it with gravel bike, but I don't want to mislead anyone to do the same mistake :-P ). Just before Kalousi, the road became asphalt again but we quickly took right turn in direction to Alepoxori, on pure dirt roads again.
This section is part of Doliho endurance race (on foot) which I did in 2019 and knew the route quite well. It was mostly downhill, but it had also few "bumps" with impossible grades, the good thing was, they were very small and didn't hurt so much. Last downhill to Alepoxori was again good example of this being suited for MTB, not gravel, with -10% grade and lost of loose rocks, my hands started to hurt not having any suspension.
Quick stop in Alepoxori next to the spring and of we went for a demanding climb to Spartia. Grades up to 17% but fair road surface and steady climb went on quickly. Then still going up to the first waterfall of Spartia (quick detour for views). Then downhill back to the village and continue down to the monastery of Agion Panton (All Saints). Instead of going all the way down to Ag Dimitrios, we took a left detour at the monastery with some fun dirt roads in local forest area and descended to Kiparisi. Laste section was just next to the Parapeiros river (very beautiful part) to find the national road 33 around the technical lake and the dam.
Really demanding climbs with high grades make it a difficult one. But the views to Erymanthos mountains are awesome, and sections in the forest and by the river were a pleasant surprise!
