Overlooking the Kvarner Gulf, Opatija (Opatija) is the most important tourist center on the eastern coast of Istria thanks to the mild climate that characterizes this area: the woods that surround it protect it from the strong winds of the hinterland (which instead rage in the nearby Učka massif), while the islands of the gulf protect it from disturbances coming from the sea.
