Itinerary description
This is a great trail system for beginner mountain bike riders. I took two 3rd graders (age 8). There is one initial dip where the trail crosses Mere Stream. That section of the trail is the most used, most eroded and has the most roots. That bit is definitely not too gnarly for most bikers, though a heck of an intro for any true beginner. Other than that, the inclines are generally gentle. Most (perhaps 75%) of the trails are marked blue or yellow and are a series of oxbows meandering through mixed evergreen and deciduous forest. In riding with kids, as they were ahead, I could often see them riding in the opposite direction when the trail looped back on itself. There is a flat perimeter trail (not blazed but obvious enough, it's brown on the trail maps) with a few access points from the loopy trails. We had an equipment issue and had to bail early. We were able to cut through 20 feet of forest from the blue loopy trail to get to the perimeter trail to take the easy way back to parking. There are many signs at intersections with "you are here" marked so you can orient yourself. There are a few bridges - all pretty new. Plenty of roots across the trails but nothing impossible or begging a work party. We didn't see anyone else on the trail - Tuesday. It was 100% humidity and we were 99.9% in the shade. We only felt hot when we stopped. 5 minutes from Fielders' Choice and Dairy Frost. ;-)
