Itinerary description
Most part of the ascent is on asphalt road, starting from Ierapetra up to the small village of Meseleroi. The way up (around 10 km) progressively reveals a panoramic view of the south coast, turning right circa 1km after the village gives some view of the north coast (from Agios Nkolaos to Pachia Ammos). It is from then on that the dirt road begins through olive grove and some vineyards and from time to time superb flashy olianders recognizable from far away. The slope is relatively moderate but with lots of gravel and bumpy stones. Approximatively 1km before the col, there is a mtb (or motorcycle ?) training field with jumps and inclined turns which came as a total surprise in the middle of nowhere ( I did not have a try because of the heat, and with no elbow or kneel protection I felt it would have been too risky). Note that it is visible on google earth, recognizable through a strange pattern of zigzags.
Reaching the col (circa 660 m) near big communication antennas gives a panoramic view of the whole region around Ierapetra and surrounding south coast. The descent is steep at some places but without danger nor any serious technical difficulties (provided the brakes are reliable ;-). The dirt road ends around the village of Stavros, and there are a few more km of descent on a speedy asphalt road, before reaching the flat main road to Ierapetra.
I had only 3 liters of water and wished I had more. The trip took about 3 hours.
