Monte San Gabriele, (in Slovenian Škabrijel) is a mountain of 646 m in western Slovenia, 3 km as the crow flies from the city of Gorizia.
It is located inside the settlement of Moncorona (Kromberk) of the municipality of Nova Gorica. At its feet, towards the south-west is the hill of Santa Caterina (Kekec / Sv. Katarina).
During the First World War it was an impregnable Austro-Hungarian stronghold, full of tunnels and trenches.
This itinerary, starting separately, takes place in the Slovenian territory and leads to the top of the mountain taking the road from the square of Casarossa and after crossing the border and the village of Salcano, at an intersection with traffic lights you take in the direction of Lokve and at km 4,5 (indicated by milestone table and Wp 01) is held on the cart that goes up to the right. This track in the middle of the forest, 2 km long leading to the summit, immediately climbs hard and decisive with continuous variations of slope from 10 to 20%.
From the summit you go back for about 500 meters and turn right (Wp 02) where an exciting singletrack for experts (diff. S2 / S3) starts, apart from a short transitory stretch to move to the Santa Caterina hill, leads to the village of Kromberk with 500 meters of disl. downhill.
At Kromberk, after crossing the state road and 3 km of the Panovec forest, it comes out onto the asphalt road that leads to the pass of Casarossa and then to the square with the same name starting point of the itinerary.
