Itinerary description
Although this does not appear as such on the adjacent hints, this was a round trip along the south coast, riding west first, and then coming back higher.
Starting from Mirtos along the sea, the terrain is nearly flat up to the village of Tertsa, where the ascent begins to circumvent a big hill that prevents prolonging the trip along the sea.
Turning left when possibility occurs, the journey continues along the coast with a superb view on the sea some 80 m below, until the village of Sidonia becomes visible. From this point I went higher but could not go on because of a flat tire (beware of thorny plants and sharp stones). I did not manage to fix it, the spare part I had brought with did not have the correct valve, and no water available to identify where the puncture was (it must have been some kind of tiny spike). This became a nightmare as I had to pump every km on the way back to Mirtos where I found necessary relief, and the descent part was becoming dangerous on a tilting tire...
Conclusion is : better check fixing materials before starting a journey on Cretan roads...
