Itinerary description
This is a journey that revealed easier than anticipated, mainly because I did the difficult part early, i.e. before heat strikes (I passed the main col before noon).
Starting from Kavousi on a dirt road from place to place covered by concrete, the first col above the Kavousi gorges leads to the valley terminating it, wich implies a first descent into the bottom of this valley followed by an ascent to next col before reaching Melisses, the name of a few hovels spread among vegetation. Trees provide the comfort of shade and is a good opportunity for drinking necessary water before next ascent (the hard one).
What comes next is a long ascent. It begins first by zigzagging above the houses of the area and going straight on instead of prolonging the main path that turns right in the direction of Thripti (another trail, a harder one). The ascent is most of the time not too steep (although some parts are) but the dirt road itself is not always in good conditions, with sometimes large rocks here and there, lots of gravel and treacherous spiny plants in the middle (beware I enjoyed 5 punctures in 10 days of touring ;-).
Anyway, the surrounding landscape is worth the effort, the elevation progressively gives an amazing view up to the sea through the entire valley and surrounding cliffs.
Nearing the col was sometimes facilitated by wind, sometimes a bit hindered, depending on its varying orientation. Worth to note for those unfamiliar to Cretan mountain paths, there are two barriers that have to be opened (and closed thereafter), to prevent goats escaping, or eating vineyards, I am not sure. The first one is above the village, the second one at the main col.
From then on, it is nearly a permanent descent. First on dirt roads to the nearby renovated village of Bebonas and up to Chrisopigi where asphalt road begins (uninterrupted until sea). There is still a few uphills until the village of Stavrochori, but a piece of cake compared to the beginning...
The total length of the trail is about 30 km and its duration (excluding break points) 3:30 at moderate pace.
