Itinerary description
This ride was made up from parts of routes on the Madres-Coronat FFC site: route 11 (red) up the Belloc ridge and route 9 (black) for a stretch en balcon above the Caillan stream. Neither segment was technically difficult (though we found later that other parts of route 9 are fearsome). In return they were scenic and sometimes exposed, especially the Caillan stretch.
The stretch at the high point, overlooking the Tet valley, vertically down to the Villefrance fort, and across to Canigou is truly spectacular.
Be warned that the Madres-Coronat routes are often not well signposted on the ground, and that the downloadable GPS tracks may be out of date. We got lost on the descent on account of this, and had to omit a section we’d have liked to follow.
