Itinerary description
There is a cluster of industrial factory activity at the head of the estuary.
The terrain is low lying compared to the west side of the river, and the atmosphere is much slower paced, reflecting a less developed, vintage rural agricultural/fishing lifestyle. Services are sparce and may not be signed or open. Off the beaten track.
This would be an appropriate 80 km return trip from Kaifaqu. Some short segments are best suited for mountain bikes.
Bicycle touring along the coast and up the Yalu River is popular with locals but not yet developed for foreigners. Besides culture and language, there are few accommodations with official registration for foreigners to stay. However, camping is apparently unrestricted. A Mandarin or Dongbei hua speaking guide is a good idea.
Waypoints
Chengzicun Village, at North Gate (Arch)
A small market town on the pass. On market days the road is very narrow and crowded with lots of food stalls and canteens on both sides.
Cornfields, Factory overview
There is a small group of factories at the head of the river estuary. Photo of typical inland hill terrain.
Dengshahe River crossing
Strong tidal flows, lots of fishing activity from bridge deck. Muddy waters.
At the estuary mouth.
A minor dirt connecting road (may be muddy after rain) leads to a one-lane paved track along the waterfront. Aquaculture activities all along coast are best appreciated on satellite view. Mountainous offshore islands are visible, with ferry service from Golden Pebble Beach Port and another port further east.
Seaside single lane, paved. Vintage Dongbei countryside.
August dragonflies and cicadas are abundant. No traffic or persons seen. Vintage aquaculture buildings extend along edge of road.
The western edge of Wangjiazhuang (Princely Village)
Vintage rural agricultural layout and housing with a dirt lane grid. No sign of the China development boom. Very quiet. A narrow paved lane zigzags to the central plaza and waterfront.
Town plaza, assembly station.
Empty on the day. A small shrine in background. The Japanese 2'nd army landings of the Russo-Japanese War (1904) and the 1930's Manchukuo Occupation occurred in small fishing ports along this coastline.
Waterfront plaza, small fishboat harbor
Not very active on a hot August 2023 day around noon, seaside barbeque workers asleep in hammocks in the shade. The prominent building includes a restaurant and staff dorms. Litter disposal is relatively deficient around here, especially on the beach.
Secondary road conditions
The local area is flat-lying and non descriptive compared to the section west of the Sand River Estuary.
Two direct multilane east-west highways
Broad shoulders. Extra care needed for potential debris hazards on shoulders, maintenance issues, possible missing drain covers, and so on. Traffic is sparse.
