Itinerary description
The distance between Tapera and Conceição do Mato Dentro is 33.7 km and because of its length this stage of the journey has some sections with distinct characteristics.
The hamlet of Córregos, a district of Conceição do Mato Dentro, is located on the stretch betweenTapera and Conceição do Mato Dentro. In this charming setting there are still fine examples of both colonial mansions and 18th century churches, such as the Church of Nossa Senhora da Aparecida and the Dos Passos Chapel. There is only one pousada in Córregos.
The trail between km 24 and the city of Conceição de Mato Dentro follows state highway MG-010. In this section, the traveler needs to pay attention to a large volume of motor vehicle traffic. Here the tourist encounters beautiful landscapes and sees characteristic herds of buffalo.
Conceição do Mato Dentro is the final destination of this leg of the journey. Founded in 1702 by pioneers in search of gold and precious stones, the city became one of the most beautiful towns in Minas Gerais. Religious tourism is the principal draw. The urban landscape is highlighted with magnificent churches, the Igreja Matriz, the Igreja do Matozinhos, and the Igreja do Rosário, and old colonial mansions. The municipality is set apart as well by its fascinating natural attractions, like the Salão de Pedras, the Colina da Paz, the Lagoa Azul, and the spectacular waterfall, Tabuleiro, the largest in Minas Gerais, with a 273-meter high free-falling cascade, just 19 km from the city center.
Conceição do Mato Dentro - Morro do Pilar
Characterized by steep descents, this 27.7 km stretch passes through several areas of dense woodland, perfect spots for rest and refreshment along the trail.
After km 20, broad vistas of the Serra do Espinhaço and several other mountain ranges in the background come into view. The traveler continues to get glimpses of this “sea of mountains” from clearings as the road passes through well-preserved forests.
The final destination, Morro do Pilar, is recognized as the first city in South America to operate a blast furnace for the production of iron, built there in 1814. This locality has an infrastructure to support tourists and its strong point is its natural attractions, mainly its waterfalls, located outside of the center of town and well worth a visit.
