Itinerary description
The entire stretch between Mariana and Ouro Preto is asphalt. Along the way, the Mina da Passagem, the only gold mine in Brazil open to visitors, is worth a stop.
This leg of the journey ends in the city of Ouro Preto, the former capital of Minas Gerais, which was the seat of the largest city council of the colony and its largest prison, the Casa dos Contos. The city is steeped in a rich historical past, still alive in its dozens of churches, its culture and its vibrant art scene, as well as in its own special cuisine, a fusion of traditional “cozinha mineira” (the typical gastronomy of Minas Gerais) and international haute cuisine. Ouro Preto is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
