Itinerary description
The first 2 kms of this 16.7 km leg of the journey climb steeply to a beautiful vantage point with a view of the Serra do Espinaço and the hamlets of Capelinha and Mato Grosso.
The turnoff for Itapanhoacanga, a district of Alvorada de Minas, is at km 11. From here on the road is full of holes and ditches, especially during the rainy season when travel by car can be quite difficult. The road here passes through a stretch of a fascinating tropical rainforest with several centuries-old, colonial-style farmhouses.
.
Near km 13, the tourist is rewarded with more beautiful scenery. In this region known as Duas Pontes, a watercourse flows under two bridges and descends over the rocks, forming small waterfalls.
This stage ends in the district of Itapanhoacanga, a village of 1,700 residents which first emerged during the 18th century gold rush. After a period of prosperity fueled by the abundance of precious metals mined in the region, Itapanhoaconga entered into decline. Today, the historic churches still evoke that golden epoch. The rococo-style painted panels in the Igreja do Rosário are considered important works of Minas Gerais’ colonial period. There is but one pousada here.
