Itinerary description
Cycling - The Serra di Ivrea is a "U" shaped moraine around the city of Ivrea.
It was amassed by the glacier which also carved the course of the Dora Baltea river.
The eastern ridge runs straight and almost horizontally, clearly visible from high observation points on Torino's hill and from the mountains.
Good number of trails available through the thick woods.
After reaching the turning point, the descent is initially a nice twisty "flow" single track at moderate speed as the downhill grade is quite soft.
After the ride we had a mid-afternoon meal at a local club/eatery. Nice outdoors setting, good buffet food and nice company.
At Km 6.0 this track passes by an historical feature, that is the belltower of the former church of St. Martin of Paerno. Erected around AD 1150, the church was part of a hamlet that was later abandoned. Such hamlet, including the church, was demolished in 18th century as the buildings were in too poor conditions to be saved. Only the belltower survived and it stands alone today in the middle of a meadow. It was recently restored and consolidated, and kept as a memory of the ancient hamlet of Paerno. Nickname in local language is "Ciocaron" - meaning "big bell (or belltower)".
If clear - not today though, views over the Alps are quite nice from there.
