Itinerary description
Cycling - Loop ride to Lanzo and return along the north bank of the Stura di Lanzo river.
Several fossil tree trunks and stumps along a portion of the Stura have been studied since mid-19th century. Continuous erosion uncovered more elements since and, in 2010, exceptionally abundant rainfall resulted in increased erosion action.
In such a dynamic environment, new elements become exposed while some are being eroded and washed away. Of a 10-meter long section of laying trunk, as it was when I had first seen it, only about two meters remain albeit still fascinating.
The large trees (Glyptostrobus europaeus) are kin to the American Sequoia and are about three million years old.
