Itinerary description
Cycling - Loop around Montechiaro d'Asti.
Almost entirely unpaved through country roads in hilly vineyard-land. All ups-and-downs with sharp climbs - max 23%.
One of the best soil for vines is clay, therefore riding in such terrain requires totally dry conditions for a good number of preceding days. Riding would otherwise prove almost impossible.
When dry, the clay mud is generally hard solid and, inevitably, in some places retains the deep prints and ruts from the tires of agricultural vehicles. Also, rain causes erosion in points.
In areas, the soil is sandstone and thick sand is to be encountered, then also requiring good riding technique.
One nice point is the Church of Saints Nazario and Celso, perched atop a hill. Splendid example of Romanesque architecture. Built in year 1130.
One of the last warm days for this October. Nice views over mountains and perched villages.
