Itinerary description
We took the 12 km River Track from Clyde to Alexandra to start the Roxburgh Gorge trail. This track runs along the west side of the Clutha and is an alternate to cycling through Clyde streets. It is a mostly narrow undulating track of varying surfaces that adds a little extra challenge to the day. It is mostly shady and is a walking track as well. The Roxburg Gorge track from Alexandra to Roxburgh Dam is broken up midway with a jet boat ride (must be booked in advance). This is the only way to do the whole trail continuously at the moment. The boat trip is well worth it. It is accompanied by colour commentary from the captain about the rich gold mining history and historic remnants along the river banks. Some modest climbs with a massive switchback as you reach the dam. There are a couple of super narrow and twisty sections that anyone of any ability should get off and walk their bike. This is an absolutely gorgeous trail. It is almost entirely remote apart from the section close to the Dam where the highway is visible.
