Itinerary description
Pedal your way through northern Lazio and into Umbria on this all-day bicycle trip from Rome. After cycling from the meeting point to the train station, get your bike on the train yourself and get ready to depart from the Eternal City via train. You will have the chance to admire the Roman countryside during the 1-hour ride up to the north. Choose an electric or a mountain bicycle and commence the ride with your guide leading the way. Cruise through the verdant Tiber Valley and the Oasis of Alviano, a rich nature reserve. Take some time to enjoy a quick lunch, provided by the guide, and then continue on to the striking Civita di Bagnoregio.
Once abandoned due to frequent earthquakes, Civita has been resurrected thanks to a number of artists who discovered the town and restored it. Today it’s crammed with restaurants and art galleries. Perched atop a steep hill, the town is a sight to behold. Next, pedal toward Orvieto where there are a few upward climbs. But the effort is worth it; once the city of Orvieto comes into view, you’ll understand why. The medieval town sits majestically on the cliffs. Visit and explore the town, checking out the stunning cathedral and walking down the many narrow cobblestoned lanes.
If all the cycling has built up a hunger, there’s good news: next up is a hearty meal in one of the city’s many wine bars. Indulge in cheese, salami, salad, pasta and plenty of local wine. Afterward, cycle to the station and get on the train for the 1-hour journey back to the Italian capital.
