Itinerary description

Designed around the Black River Gorges National Park, the largest protected forest of Mauritius, the picturesque Mare Longue Reservoir and the scenic Tamarin Falls, this trail showcases the natural beauty of Mauritius, passing through dense forests, flowing along the Vol aux Vents valley lip, and cutting through vast sugarcane field tracks.

It offers experiences for beginners (Alexandra Falls to Le Gorges Parking) and hardcore riders (reverse route). Have it your way!

This trail starts at the Alexandra Falls parking. You can walk to the nearby viewpoint and catch a glimpse of the waterfall. You then proceed through the lesser-known trail which connects to the B102 - Bassin Blanc Road up to the Les Marres trailhead. You will be moving in a damp rainy upland forest, to drier long fast straights and open corners which provide a fun flowing ride with well-spaced technical features. If you got time to look beyond your front wheel, you will enjoy some rewarding views too. At some point, you will be rolling on a single-track ending up at the Mare Longue Reservoir spillway. You will shift to a drier lowland once you passed Magenta. This long flowing trail has some great fire trail descents thrown in for good measure.

If you start from Les Gorges Parking, long climbs will characterise your ride, packing enough technical features and variety to test your legs, lungs, and skills.

WORDS OF CAUTION:

- Prepare and plan ahead! If you are courageous enough to ride the trail on you own, well … you may very well be on your own in some places if trouble gets in the way. Know your equipment, your ability and prepare accordingly. The topography of the trail includes a number of microclimates. It has happened to us that we started off all sunny and got caught off-guard by rain and thunderstorms (we enjoyed it though!) You may also be without cellular signal in some areas.

- Part of the trail that crosses the National Park to the reservoir spillway is a trail designed primarily for hikers (I am one myself). Set a good example by respecting trail users when passing them by giving way, slowing down to a walking pace or even stopping. Also, anticipate trail users around corners or in blind spots. It may be that mountain biking is not permitted in this segment, but I still come across them every time I trek there.

Hi. It is a one-way trip only for me. We start from Vacoas, ride to Alexandra Falls and get somebody to pick us up at the end of the trail.

Thanks for sharing, can you do all the track sitting on your bike or some places you need to carry you bike or walk next to it ?

You stay seated most of the time and you do not have to carry or walk with your bike. But you do have to get into attack position on some technical parts of the trail.
