Itinerary description
Today we start our exploring tour to the east along the Río Puchka valley up to Río Marañón and back over Llamellin to Huari. If everything goes according to plan, we will be back to Huari in seven days. The idea behind this section is to visit the Río Marañón which is one of two source rivers of the Amazonas. The route to this turning point lays between 3000 m and 4000 m promising beautifull views and some unknown trail decents. I have spent several months planing this and painted the complete Openstreetmap of this area only for this loop.
The day before in Huari we had tried to get information about possible hospedajes on our route. But the tourist office in the townhall could not help. We only got the name of a lady in Castillo who offers rooms to stay.
The morning starts with a technical decent from Huari down to the tarmac road to Pomachaca. At this small village we cross Rió Huaritambo at the former Inca bride, but after a calm and interesting path section we had to turn around. Some meters of this old path were washed away and there was no way around.
The ascending road to Huachis crosses the Inca trail several times; the slope has been an intensely used agricultural area in these times. Only some less spectacular walls have survived the past 500 years.
In Castillo we ask for the lady, find her but all rooms are occupied, there is a fiesta going on in Huachis. OK, so will will look for an other option there. Fiesta preparations are obvious in Huachis, with the help of a very friendly inhabitant we find a private accomodation after some effort. There are three hospedajes, one is occupied and the owners of the others can not be found.
Karin likes to stay in the village while I am going to extend our tour uphill to Soledad de Tambo. There is an old Inca settlement which I like to visit and a downhill path directly to Huachis.
