Itinerary description
Translapina is one of the must see roads in Romania. It is knows as the highest altitude road in the country.
Road is mostly in good shape, with fairly new tarmac and usually well maintained.
The section between Sebes and Obarsia Lotrului has a few sections with older tarmac, but most of it is not in a very bad shape. Caution is necessary though as conditions might change.
Once you get to Lake Oasa, you can take a break and admire the dam's view and the mountains ahead of you. There are some small shops here where you can buy food and small souvenirs.
Before getting to Obarsia Lotrului, there is a section of arround 500 m with no tarmac, but with hard gravel that can be passed with any motorcycle and car.
Obarsia Lotrului to Ranca is the most spectacular part of Transalpina, with the maximum altitunde at Pasul Urdene (2145). This section is often cloudy and early in the morning it can be foggy, even during the summer. Also, make sure you check before if the road is open, as each winter this section is being closed (November to May).
Once you get to Ranca, you can look for accommodation and you will find plenty good restaurants.
There are no fuel stations on this route, so make sure you have plenty of fuel to get you through.
