Ruta 74. Por los valles guipuzcoanos y acceso a Aránzazu

Sector de vías comarcales por Guipúzcoa, tiene el encanto de los escasos puntos del País Vasco donde se conserva la actividad rural. El inconveniente es que los valles son tan estrechos que en algunos tramos hay que compartir espacio con el río, el tren y un intenso tráfico de vehículos pesados los días laborables o de ciclistas los fines de semana

Se pasa de un valle a otro por humildes carreteras, tan sinuosas que es difícil mantener la vertical. Cuando el terreno se ensancha, lo ocupan un sinfín de fábricas

El trecho entre Elorrio y Azcoitia es una auténtica delicia. Se trata de una carreterita serpenteante que, mientras trepa hacia el puerto de Elosu (681 m), discurre por las sombrías galerías que forman las hileras de los enormes plátanos y robles que bordean el trazado. Así hasta alcanzar un cordal desde donde las panorámicas ya no encuentran obstáculo alguno

El breve tramo entre Mondragón y las proximidades de Vitoria, que pasa por los puertos de Salinas (592 m) y Arlabán (616 m), está indicado para quienes no quieren ver la autovía ni en pintura. De dibujo retorcidísimo, la carretera muestra claras señales de descuido, pero atraviesa un estimulante entorno entre boscajes de hayas y robles

Los 10 km de la subida al monasterio de Aránzazu (fin de carretera) son muy divertidos y brindan unas vistas estupendas. Muy recomendable

Mi opinión

Coincido parciamente con el autor del libro. El tramo desde Zumárraga hasta casi Azkoitia, el que va junto al río Ibaia es muy bonito, así como la subida al puerto de Elosu. Lo mismo con el puerto de Arlabán, retorcido y divertido. Todo lo demás no vale demasiado, ni siquiera la subida a Aránzazu. Lo peor, la cantidad de tráfico de camiones en días laborables. Se hace realmente molesto circular con tanto tráfico. Quizá si hubiera ido un fin de semana…

My opinion

I partially agree with the author of the book. The stretch from Zumarraga to almost Azkoitia, the one that goes along the Ibaia river is very nice, as well as the climb to the Elosu pass. The same with the Arlabán pass, twisty and fun. Everything else is not really worth it, not even the ascent to Aránzazu. The worst thing, the amount of truck traffic on weekdays. It is really annoying to drive with so much traffic. Maybe if I had gone on a weekend?

I would not say it is highly recommended
