Ruta 38. Puerto de Ventana (1587 m) y desfiladeros

A los pies de las moles de Peña Ubiña (2417 m) y Peña Rueda (2152 m) se va abriendo una carretera que, como es habitual en casi todas las vías que comunican Asturias con Castilla y León a través de la cordillera, es más confortable por una vertiente que por otra. En este caso, el lado más exigente es el asturiano, donde la carretera achica sus dimensiones y se retuerce para salvar en un corto espacio un desnivel más que considerable

Es lo que ocurre en el puerto de Ventana, que no sólo señala el límite entre ambas comunidades, sino también entre dos paisajes bien diferentes. El páramo en el lado castellano contrasta con los espesos bosques, a la vista desde el puerto, del Parque Natural de Somiedo, donde rebaños de vacas y caballos se mueven a sus anchas

Entre frondosos hayedos, la carretera se adentra en dos profundas grietas abiertas en la piedra por el curso del agua: los desfiladeros de Páramo y Teverga. A la carretera no le queda más remedio que acomodarse a duras penas al angosto paso. Una ruta magnífica

Mi opinión

Totalmente de acuerdo con el autor. El asfalto de subida por el lado castellano es estupendo y las curvas son perfectas. Desde el mirador Puerto Ventana no nos cansamos de disfrutar de montes, rocas y verde. El mirador del puerto Ventana suele estar muy cubierto por nubes que remontan la montaña, creando un entorno algo amenazante

El puerto Ventana da entrada a Asturias. La subida por la vertiente leonesa es a través de una fantástica carretera, ancha y abierta. Pero todo cambia al cruzar la línea divisoria. La carretera se estrecha aunque el asfalto es bueno y las curvas, deliciosas. Todo esto hace que la bajada de este puerto por la vertiente asturiana sea tan maravillosa que cuando llegué abajo, al pueblo de Páramo (Parmu), me di vuelta para subirlo y volverlo a bajar. Son 20 kilómetros extra pero merece la pena, no siempre se puede disfrutar de puertos como este

Y no fueron los únicos kilómetros extra: llegando a Proaza, vi un desvío a la izquierda hacia Banduxo (9 km), un pueblo medieval al que se llega subiendo 650 metros de desnivel al 8% de media. Merece la pena

La última parte del recorrido, desde Proaza hasta Trubia, siguiendo el curso del río Trubia, carece de gran interés

At the foot of the peaks of Peña Ubiña (2417 m) and Peña Rueda (2152 m) a road opens up which, as is usual on almost all the roads that connect Asturias with Castilla y León through the mountain range, is more comfortable on one side than on the other. In this case, the most demanding side is the Asturian side, where the road shrinks in size and twists and turns to overcome a more than considerable difference in altitude in a short distance

This is what happens at the Ventana pass, which not only marks the boundary between the two communities, but also between two very different landscapes. The moorland on the Castilian side contrasts with the thick forests, in view from the pass, of the Somiedo Natural Park, where cows and horses roam freely

Between leafy beech forests, the road enters two deep crevices opened in the rock by the course of the water: the Páramo and Teverga gorges. The road has no other choice but to barely fit into the narrow pass. A magnificent route

My opinion

I totally agree with the author. The asphalt on the way up on the Castilian side is great and the curves are perfect. From the Puerto Ventana viewpoint we do not tire of enjoying the mountains, rocks and greenery. The viewpoint of the Ventana pass is usually covered by clouds that go up the mountain, creating a somewhat threatening environment

The Ventana pass is the gateway to Asturias. The climb up from the Leonese side is along a fantastic road, wide and open. But everything changes when you cross the dividing line. The road narrows although the asphalt is good and the curves are delightful. All this makes the descent of this pass on the Asturian side so wonderful that when I got down to the village of Páramo (Parmu), I turned around to go up and back down. It's an extra 20 kilometres but it's worth it, you can't always enjoy passes like this one

And these were not the only extra kilometres: arriving at Proaza, I saw a detour to the left towards Banduxo (9 km), a medieval village that you reach by climbing 650 metres at an average gradient of 8%. It is well worth it

The last part of the route, from Proaza to Trubia, following the course of the Trubia river, is not very interesting
