Route 164. Cameros mountain range (II) and Piqueras pass
Between Logroño and Soria, the road N-111 has to cross the abrupt territory of the Cameros mountain range through a legendary landmark: the Piqueras pass, almost always closed due to ice. A tunnel makes it possible to avoid it, but the motorcyclists of race will not miss the opportunity (weather permitting) to enjoy a sometimes demanding, sometimes pleasant and always fun route
As it happens with the favorite stretches of the motorists, this one crosses places of exceptional beauty, either among beautiful forests where Atlantic (beeches) and Mediterranean (oaks) trees cohabit in harmony, or on the banks of the Pajares reservoir or through the magnificent Iregua river canyon carved in the limestone, at the foot of whose high walls we ride. Unrepeatable
My opinion
As the author well indicates, the Piqueras pass must be ascended without using the tunnel. A great asphalt and a deserted road allow you to enjoy a good handful of horseshoe turns. After crowning the top there is a viewpoint over the mountain range of Cebollera that is worth the effort
Descending the pass you will see the sign for Piqueras inn (Venta de Piqueras). If it is time to have lunch, this spot is a great place to stop and rest
The descent from Piqueras to La Rioja is comfortable and quiet, with very good asphalt and curves well known to Riojan motorcyclists. It goes down to Villanueva de Cameros where it turns left to border the González Lacasa reservoir
The La Rasa pass is another fun ascent with no traffic. On my trail to Torrecilla en Cameros I have turned off towards this pass to visit Torre en Cameros and enjoy another almost empty road with fun hairpin bends, climbs and descents. The village has the charm of being at the end of a dead end road: the world ends here
It is worth mentioning the route through the Iregua river canyon, with the red mountains outlined by the river
