Route 160. Urbión peaks
The route crosses the very heart of the Urbión peaks and enters the Cameros mountain range. Its landmark is the Santa Inés pass (1753 m), which offers majestic views of the plateau and the neighboring mountain ranges, carpeted by a very tight pine forest
As in so many other sectors of this area, the road is impeccable, slightly winding and of good dimensions in the Soria mountain ranges, while on the side of the pass, Burgos territory, it is more modest and in worse condition, with frequent potholes and the edges of the asphalt bitten by the effects of winter snow and ice. In short, the route lends itself to a graceful driving on the Soria side, but requires a lot of attention on the Burgos side
A few kilometers from Vinuesa, a road leads to the Black Lagoon of Urbión, a place of glacial origin that stands out for its great beauty and its literary resonances. Highly recommended if you drive in the area
My opinion
The LR-333 road from Viniegra de Abajo to Viniegra de Arriba is an endless succession of curves and good asphalt, following the canyon of the Urbión river. In some places the canyon is very narrow, with impressive walls and cliffs
Following the LR-333 from Viniegra de Arriba you reach the Montenegro pass, which is the change of province between La Rioja and Soria. The climb has sharp curves and good asphalt, through a green mountain without vegetation. Very nice, however
The ascent of Santa Inés is a great asphalt, quite fast curves, not too sharp. At the top there is a small ski resort
The access to the Black Lagoon is wonderful, through a gigantic pine forest of Soria. When arriving at the cafeteria (first parking) there is a sign of prohibited to pass motor vehicles. However, you can continue 1.8 km and, at the end, there is a second parking lot where there are usually cars and motorcycles. From this place you have to walk to the lagoon by a paved trail, which is definitely worth a visit. The black lagoon is very well conditioned, with walkways and stairs. It is an environment with pine trees, grass and meadows. At the end is the lagoon, in a cirque that collects water from the high and spectacular mountains around. When you reach the Black Lagoon, there is a wooden walkway to the left that runs along part of it. Quiet place on a daily day; on weekends it is sure to be crowded
