Ruta 158. Por tierras de Burgos

En este recorrido por la Castilla agrícola, bañada por cursos de agua del sistema hidrográfico del Duero, puede encontrarse de todo: desde tramos montaraces que tratan de salvar un terreno agreste, como ocurre en la sierra de Covarrubias, hasta otros llanos donde la ruta se tumba placenteramente. Las carteras, humildes pero en general en buen estado, invitan a disfrutar del inconfundible entorno, dominado por espesos bosques y vastos cultivos de secano

Este trayecto es de gran interés turístico, ya que enhebra las preciosas localidades castellanoleonesas de Covarrubias, Santo Domingo de Silos, Caleruega y Peñaranda de Duero, además de tres importantes ríos: el Duero, el Esgueva y el Arlanza. Buena alternativa a la tediosa autovía A-1 entre Burgos y Aranda de Duero

El tramo entre Covarrubias y Hortigüela, en la N-234, es realmente interesante. Su ondulado dibujo se tiende a los pies de una larga pared rocosa que acompaña en todo momento a la carretera por uno de sus flancos

Mi opinión

El comienzo de esta ruta 158 me sorprende en la localidad riojana de Ezcaray, desde donde conduzco hasta el inicio oficial de la ruta, en Cuevas de San Clemente por la importante carretera N-120, escoltado por centenares de peregrinos que van caminando por los alrededores hacia Santiago de Compostela. En las inmediaciones de Burgos me desvío hacia el sur por la BU-800, despidiéndome de los peregrinos compostelanos y saludando a los poquísimos caminantes que siguen la Ruta del destierro del Cid, camino a Atienza. Estamos en una de las encantadoras y estupendas carreteras castellanas, solitarias, de curvas abiertas y de paisajes despejados

En Covarrubias tomo un desvío a la izquierda hacia Hortigüela, como propone el autor, por una carretera montañera y sinuosa y divertida. A mitad de camino aparecen las enormes ruinas del monasterio de San Pedro de Arlanza. Detenerme a tomar una foto me hizo ver que este monasterio fue un set de rodaje de exteriores de la película El bueno, el Feo y el Malo, de Sergio Leone, con Clint Eastwood (The Good, The Bad, and the Ugly, 1966). Hortigüela es un bonito conjunto histórico que merece una visita. El camino hasta Hortigüela bordea el río Arlanza, paralelo a un alto farallón

Finaliza la ruta en el bonito monasterio de La vid, tras pasar por importantes localidades como Covarrubias, Santo Domingo de Silos o Peñaranda de Duero. Sin embargo, sólo recuerdo otros muchos pueblos que parecen dormidos a medio tarde y que parece que hay que cruzarlos en punto muerto para no despertarlos

Las carreteras del Sur de Burgos y Norte de Soria me han sorprendido; ha sido un lujo poder rodar por ellas, sobre todo al atardecer cuando tu sombra mide 25 metros y el sol luce sus últimos tonos rojos

Route 158. In the lands of Burgos

In this route through agricultural Castile, bathed by watercourses of the Duero hydrographic system, you can find everything: from mountainous stretches that try to save a rugged terrain, as in the Sierra de Covarrubias, to other plains where the route lies pleasantly. The roads, humble but generally in good condition, invite you to enjoy the unmistakable surroundings, dominated by thick forests and vast dry crops

This route is of great tourist interest, as it links the beautiful Castilian towns of Covarrubias, Santo Domingo de Silos, Caleruega and Peñaranda de Duero, as well as three important rivers: the Duero, the Esgueva and the Arlanza. A good alternative to the tedious A-1 highway between Burgos and Aranda de Duero

The section between Covarrubias and Hortigüela, on the N-234, is really interesting. Its undulating design lies at the foot of a long rocky wall that accompanies the road along one of its flanks at all times

My opinion

The beginning of this tour 158 surprises me in the Riojan town of Ezcaray, from where I drive to the official start of the trail, in Cuevas de San Clemente along the important road N-120, escorted by hundreds of pilgrims who are walking in the surroundings towards Santiago de Compostela. In the vicinity of Burgos, I turn south on the BU-800, saying goodbye to the pilgrims to Santiago de Compostela and greeting the very few walkers who follow the Route of the exile of the Cid, on the trail to Atienza. We are in one of the charming and wonderful Castilian roads, lonely, with open curves and clear landscapes

In Covarrubias I take a detour to the left towards Hortigüela, as proposed by the author, along a mountainous, winding and fun road. Halfway along the trail the huge ruins of the monastery of San Pedro de Arlanza appear. Stopping to take a photo made me realize that this monastery was an exterior film set for Sergio Leone's The Good, the Bad and the Ugly, with Clint Eastwood (1966). Hortigüela is a beautiful historical site that is well worth a visit. The route to Hortigüela follows the Arlanza river, parallel to a high cliff

The route ends at the beautiful monastery of La vid, after passing through important localities such as Covarrubias, Santo Domingo de Silos or Peñaranda de Duero. However, I only remember many other villages that seem to be asleep in the middle of the afternoon and it seems that you have to cross them in neutral so as not to wake them up

The roads south of Burgos and north of Soria have surprised me; it has been a luxury to ride on them, especially at sunset when your shadow is 25 meters long and the sun is showing its last red tones
