I leave the campsite on the way to Kemi, Oulu, with the purpose of arriving in Helsinki today. It is my priority objective, and here we go ....
Many lakes and forests and at the gates of Helsinki I am.
Helsinki is the capital city and the most populous municipality in Finland. Located on the coast of the Gulf of Finland, it is the seat of the Uusimaa region, in southern Finland, and has a population of 642,045. The urban area of the city has a population of 1,231,595, which makes it the most populated urban area of Finland and the most important center of the country in politics, education, finance, culture and research. Helsinki is 80 kilometers (50 miles) north of Tallinn, Estonia, 400 km (250 miles) east of Stockholm, Sweden, and 390 km (240 miles) west of St. Petersburg, Russia. It has close historical ties with these three cities.
Together with the cities of Espoo, Vantaa and Kauniainen, and the surrounding peripheral cities, Helsinki forms the metropolitan area of Greater Helsinki, which has a population of over 1.4 million. Often considered the only metropolis in Finland, it is the northernmost metropolitan area in the world, with more than one million people, as well as the northernmost capital of a member state of the EU. After Stockholm and Oslo, Helsinki is the third largest city in the Nordic countries. The city is served by the Helsinki International Airport, located in the neighboring city of Vantaa, with frequent service to many destinations in Europe and Asia.
Helsinki has one of the highest urban living standards in the world. In 2011, the British magazine Monocle ranked Helsinki as the most livable city in the world in its index of habitable cities. In the 2016 Economist Intelligence Unit habitability survey, Helsinki ranked ninth among 140 cities.
In Helsinki I decide to seek shelter outside the city, but close to it. Tomorrow at nine o'clock I have to be in La Nao, which will take me to Tallinn, the capital of the Baltic Republic of Estonia, and I'll find it at Camping Espoo Oittaa.
