Helsinki is the waiting room of Tallinn (Estonia) to which tomorrow I want to arrive. As it is a fairly large city (Helsinki) I try to find accommodation nearby, but outside of it. I do it at Camping Espoo Oittaa about 20 kilometers from Helsinki from where the boat will take me to Tallinn. There are several shipping companies that make the journey from just under one hundred kilometers in just over two and a quarter hours.
For Helsinki, I have been wandering around for more than an hour looking for the port. The ship leaves at nine and lose it, it's a lost day. I ask and I ask and they do not understand me or I understand them ... the anguish squeezes me to see that time is ending.
Desperate, a little more than eight thirty, in the browser I put: Tallinn and with blind faith in him, I follow his indications (the arrow). Ten minutes after nine o'clock he leaves me at the port terminal. I stop in the queue and I ask to be sure and the port personnel corroborate it. I'm where I should be, thanks to the browser.
Then the tail starts moving. Buses, trucks and other vehicles go (we are going) approaching the ship that the personnel of the Port is directing us.
It is an imposing ship, with different mouths and in different levels for which, as if it were a Noah's Ark, we are entering to pass the Gulf of Finland towards the beautiful city of Tallinn. It will be a journey of something more than two hours.
It's all a ship sir. Large rooms, restaurants, shops, games rooms, playground, coffee shops. Without a doubt a floating city. The greatest I've embarked on this trip, and it will be the last one back home.
Tallin:
Tallin, mentioned for the first time in 1219, received the city's rights in 1248, but the first human settlements date back 5,000 years. The initial reclamation on the land was established by the Danes in 1219, after a successful incursion of Lindanise led by Valdemar II of Denmark, followed by a period of alternation between the Scandinavian and German governments. Due to its strategic location, the city became an important commercial center, especially from the fourteenth century until the sixteenth century, when it grew in importance as part of the Hanseatic League.
The Old Town of Tallinn is one of the best preserved medieval cities in Europe and is listed as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO. Tallinn is Estonia's main political, financial, cultural and educational center. Often called the Silicon Valley of Europe, it has the largest number of new companies per person in Europe and is the birthplace of many international companies, such as Skype. The city will host the headquarters of the IT agency of the European Union. Providing global cyber security, it is the home of NATO's Center for Cyber Defense Excellence. It is classified as a global city and has been included among the 10 most important digital cities in the world. According to the Global Index of Financial Centers, Tallinn is among the most competitive financial centers in Northern Europe and ranks 79th internationally. The city was European Capital of Culture in 2011, together with Turku in Finland.
Nothing else to disembark, I look for the old part of the city, I park the BMW and I dedicate myself to wander around the medieval city. The feeling you experience is that time has stopped. Undoubtedly Tallinn is one of the most beautiful cities of all that I have been visiting. I would have liked to be one more day in these parts, but we must continue ...
And what follows is to continue down the Gulf of Riga to the remaining Baltic Republics. After Estonia comes Latvia whose capital Riga passed by. What I see in the outskirts does not attract attention.
As I keep going down, past the town of Bauska (I should have stayed here for the night) I look for shelter. The afternoon fades and I see nothing until I read MOTEL next to the road ... I enter and what I see is a very old wooden house ... a man comes out and tells me that he has camping ... what I see it is an obsolete vans and stops for years together with two tractors in the same situation, and a lot of hives ... the place does not displease me ... total, it's about setting up shop and spending the night. He charges me five euros and I agree.
