The Rodope massif is the largest in Bulgaria, occupying about one-seventh of the country's total area, 220 to 240 km from west to east and 100 km from north to south. With a total area of 14,737 km², 83% of the Rhodope Mountains are located in Bulgarian territory, 17% in Greece. The large reserves of water and the mild climate favor the development of a wide variety of plants and animals.
Place of many mythological stories and also cults in ancient times, the massif successively experienced Greek, Roman, Byzantine and Ottoman influences. The presence of the Turks left a legacy of oriental culinary and musical traditions, but also a history plagued by uprisings and exoduses.
The economic life of the Rodope massif is largely dominated by agriculture. However, industry and services, and a tourism sector whose importance is increasing, are also of enormous importance.
