We take a boat next to the restaurant to go to the park to see hippos and on the other side we will see the chimpanzees.
River Gambia National Park is a national park of The Gambia.
Since 1979, Gambia River National Park has been the site of a chimpanzee reintroduction project, carried out by the Chimpanzee Rehabilitation Project (CRP) under the direction of Stella Marsden (daughter of Eddie Brewer). Chimpanzees seized from the illegal animal trade are reintroduced into the wild at the park. Marsden was appointed an Officer of the Order of the British Empire for her work. Prior to 1979, primates were bred in the Abuko Nature Reserve. Today, several groups of chimpanzees live undisturbed by humans on the three largest river islands (435 ha, 77 ha and 53 ha). As of July 2006, there are 77 copies. In the wild, chimpanzees became extinct in The Gambia in the early 20th century.
For the protection of the animals and visitors, entry to the islands is not allowed as the chimpanzees can be very aggressive towards humans. Exceptions are possible only with the approval of the government. Even boat trips around the islands were drastically reduced in 1998. In the past, some tried to steal chimpanzees from the park.
