Puerto Princesa Underground River National Park was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1999 and one of the New 7 Natural Wonders of the World in 2011, so it is no surprise that it is part of many trips to the Philippines. Located in Sabang, a sleepy coastal town on the island of Palawan, it is one of the best-known activities in the Philippines.
Puerto Princesa Subterranean River National Park is a protected area in the Philippines. It occupies more than 22,000 hectares and its geography is basically made up of limestone rock mountains, forming a karst-type landscape.
It is a critical area for the conservation of Philippine biodiversity. There you can find more than 800 types of plants, 165 species of birds, 30 species of mammals (including long-tailed macaques and 9 species of bats) and 19 species of reptiles (the most visible being monitor lizards). ).
In addition to being a refuge for Palawean flora and fauna, as its name indicates, it is home to the Underground River, one of the longest rivers of this type in the world. This, which flows into the South China Sea, is just over 24 kilometers long, although only the first 8 are navigable. Tourists only travel the first 1.5 kilometers aboard rowing boats.
In the cave you can find thousands of formations typical of these ecosystems. You will see stalactites, stalagmites, decorated columns and enormous chambers such as the Italian Chamber, which can hold a volume of 2.5 million square meters and is considered one of the largest in the world.
The Puerto Princesa Underground River Park has been managed by the Puerto Princesa government since 1992, but achieved its global fame when it entered the list of the New 7 Natural Wonders of the World in 2011. The other 6 are the Amazon, the bay Halong, Iguazu Falls, Jeju Island, Komodo Island and Table Mountain.
To visit the Underground River you need a permit. This can be obtained either in Puerto Princesa, in the offices where the people in charge of managing the park work, or in Sabang, in the office located on the same dock from which the boats leave for the river. It is advisable to obtain it the day before taking the excursion due to the state of the sea.
We will wait for our bangka, traditional Filipino boats, to depart towards the entrance to the Underground River.
Once you arrive at a beautiful beach and get off the boat, you just have to go to a booth where they will ask for your different payment receipts. Here you can also take your audio guide (it is in Spanish). Afterwards, walk just a couple of minutes along a beautiful walk through the jungle and stay alert, it is not unusual to see monkeys and monitor monitors.
When you get on the boat, you will have to put on a helmet. You will see that they are not only a protection mechanism in case you get hit, but they are very useful if a small animal decides to relieve itself on you. An attendant will check that the audio guide works well, you don't have to worry about pressing any buttons, since it works by itself.
The guide will paddle calmly and illuminate with his headlamp those places that are considered interesting in the cave. The audio is completely synchronized with the route, so you will hear data that will surely surprise you.
The journey takes about 45 minutes that fly by.
When we leave we will retrace the same path.
