Kunta Kinteh Island, also called Jacobo Island or James Island (until 2011), is a fluvial island in the Gambia River, which was declared a World Heritage Site by Unesco in 2003, for containing numerous vestiges of European penetration into Africa. from the 15th century until the independence of that country. The channel, which is navigable for a long stretch, is the first trade route into the West African interior and later a base for the slave trade. The vestiges of this transit constitute, not only an important historical heritage, but also a symbol for the African Diaspora. His English name James was changed in 2011 to Kunta Kinteh to give the island a Gambian name.
