This island is a World Heritage Site by Unesco and has a good number of hikes to do. Although most visitors only spend a few hours or the whole day, others decide to stay there to sleep and to enjoy the island more intensely.
The trip with the JR Ferry is free if you have the JR-Pass, and the frequency is very high for most of the day.
