We are going to carry out this beautiful excursion within the Danube Delta Biosphere Reserve. On this occasion we are going to visit one of the most unique forests of the Delta. The Letea forest is unique in that oak trees grow in a sandy area. With which, they are very unique and twist as they grow. They have practically no layer of soil, which has been gradually forming over hundreds of years. It is very difficult for them to grow in sand.
We left the Ovidiu Guesthouse again, where we previously did the Danube Delta route, Sulina Arm Biosphere Reserve . We enter through another of the Canals that form the Delta.
Now we are not going to stop much, because we have to climb quite a bit in the direction of Chilia, the northern arm of the Delta. Which is where the Letea Forest is located, very close to the Ukrainian border. Upon arrival at the forest it is very curious, some horse-drawn carriages are waiting for us that will take us through the forest
We give to one of the small towns that still remain in the area. They are old towns, which live on fish and cattle. Currently tourism is a form of income as well.
We arrive at the entrance of the Letea Forest, currently it is closed so that it is not accessed by motor vehicles. Routes can be made on foot or on horseback.
The walk inside the forest is overwhelming. We can see several types of plants that are more of a Mediterranean climate in the area, such as the famous oak, which clings tightly to this sandy soil, its branches twist in very original ways.
The forest is surrounded by dunes, it is a highly flooded area. Years ago there were great floods, which caused the population of wild horses to decline. At this time they take refuge closer to the border with Ukraine.
The guide, a local person kindly tells us many singularities and stories of the area. Back to the floats, we see a fallen tree, and as below its roots is the sand. We return back to the pier.
Now it's time to return to our home, Ovidiu Guesthouse, enjoying the breeze produced by navigating through these beautiful canals. And we will enjoy its sunsets again.
Transport : We leave from Ovidiu Guesthouse in a small boat, the guesthouse organizes the excursions.
Recommended season : Spring, Summer, Autumn, Winter.
