Boat tour made on Friday, July 24, 2015
NOTICE: It is understood that anyone who wants to do this same route assumes the responsibility that an activity entails that is not exempt from possible risks or incidents, in an environment in which common sense and circumstances can make the difference between having a good day or the opposite.
From Homer we have come to Seward, traveling the almost one hundred and seventy miles that separates both towns along Sterling Hwy or Highway 1, which, like so many others in Alaska, has sections under construction, which you have to count on if you want to arrive on time to contracted activities. This is our case, since we have contracted a descent down said river, doing rafting, and being able to verify on the ground the great love of salmon fishing in this American state, which comes from all corners of the country; as well as the large number of bald eagles (American emblem) that nest along the Kenai and other rivers that offer the authentic red gold of this state, salmon. But, as apart from knowing the rivers, we also want to know the immense fjords that are on these coasts of southeast Alaska, the next day we take a boat in the charming port that has this beautiful bay, to take a tour of its beautiful corners, and at the same time being able to see some of the glaciers in this area, as well as the effect that climate change is having on them. The small boat awaits us very early, since we will cover more than one hundred and seventy kilometers, using a little more than eight hours to do so, with the luck that the weather, at least for the moment, continues to accompany us. The light but fast boat, as soon as it leaves the pier, sets course, gradually abandoning this immense fjord, which opens up to the open sea, or rather to the Pacific Ocean. Beforehand, the boat heads west, to enter a closed and beautiful bay with large walls and the occasional rocky beach where sea lions rest peacefully. In this corner we spend a while, discovering and photographing some of its beautiful corners and inhabitants, before heading to the Holgate Glacier. To do this we will have to go all the way through the fjord in which Seward is located and thus be able to catch its parallel neighbor further west. And this would have been the case, if we had not come across several groups of whales in this section, most of them humpbacks, which delight us for a long time and make the cameras smoke, with their continuous exits and dives, until when they get tired They decide to dive and get away from the ships that are chasing them. We have skirted the last ledge of the fjord and maintaining a good cruising speed, the ship heads towards the Glacier. A few kilometers before arriving, you can clearly see the different density and color of the water, a product of what is known in some places as "glacial milk", which is neither more nor less than glacial water with the large amount of minerals that it drags on its way to the sea. As we get closer to the Holgate glacier front, we check and confirm the worst suspicions that were already observed in Homer; and it is that the vast majority of glaciers in these latitudes have suffered in the last 6-8 years a retreat of kilometers in length and hundreds of meters in thickness. Quite a shame, because we see the photos from a few years ago, and we try to imagine the great beauty that this area had and that, due to climate change, is being lost more quickly than some forecasts and studies on the subject predict. In spite of everything, the beautiful Holgate glacier front deserves a moment of contemplation and reflection, before restarting the return journey. Route that moves away from the coast, to approach a couple of islets, which allow us to see a group of whales, dolphins and even walruses, which delight us with their rapid compliments.
