Itinerary description
Hineston - Calcasieu
Paddle was done at flood stage, which made for an exciting trip. Water levels any lower would require more portages, but less difficult situations. River was beautiful as always, but plenty of tree falls and strainers to get caught up in (had one rolled kayak). Really had to pay attention to water in front of you and quickly approaching hazards. Not for beginners or weak paddlers. Saw three snakes and a couple of herons!
About a 20 minute, 2 turn shuttle, which is great for a 7 mile paddle. Easy in and out landings.
Paddling the Calcasieu is definitely one of the more scenic paddles in the state.

Lynn's Strainer
This fall was the site of a kayak roll over. Current, and kayak parallel against the tree don't mix.

Wet Portage
Just shallow enough not to be able to paddle around fall. Nothing like walking through poison ivy under water!
