Itinerary description
6 days, 132km, team of 4.
Kayaks (P&H Scorpios) rented from Clark at Sea Kayak Sardinia https://www.seakayaksardinia.com/. He also dropped us off and picked us up. Clark also sourced gas canisters for us. Everything else we arranged ourselves.
A convenient place to stay (close to the airport, easy for Clark to do pickup) is Vel Marí
velmari.it (where we stayed, great location, great value) or the camping across the road Laguna Blu campinglagunablu.com.
You cannot officially camp wild in Sardinia but you can 'bivouac' overnight. So we had small tents, pitched late, took down early, and had no problems.
However, you really cannot camp on the island of Asinara. There are only 3 legal landing spots (Fornelli, Cala Reale and Cala d’Oliva) - we did get lectured for landing for just 5 minutes near a road. So land discreetly away from the roads.
On Asinara we stayed overnight at https://www.lalocandadelparcoasinara.com/ which is lovely, not cheap but great food and charming. Very close to the harbour. In low season they are not open every day so check your dates.
We intended to circumnavigate Asinara but with the wind rising unexpectedly and knowing we couldn't camp before Cala d'Oliva, we portaged across to the east side to continue. The north cape is apparently spectacular.
Overall this is a very beautiful tour and you do get weeks of low or no winds. But you can also get very strong wind and there are long sections with nowhere to land, or with beach landings exposed to surf.
