Itinerary description
Left out of Paddlecraft Park about 0630 at low tide, the tide was still going out but had changed out in the Gulf. Sand bars were everywhere, and we had to wind our way around them. When we hit the west end of the route in Johnson's Bay, the tide was starting to come in, and as we went into those two dead-end bays to the north, they were still too shallow to get past the entrances, so we just looked in and turned around. The tide was with us about the last half of the return trip.
The eagle that had that nest destroyed by the storm near the upper bay appears to have built a new nest in a pine tree close to the same area. We'll check it out in a month or two.
There are lots of birds at low tide, a couple of dolphins in the bay, and a very large horse conch (Mmmm... chowder). The weather was perfect, and lots of tour groups were leaving just as we were arriving back at the launch. The parking lot was full. We rated the trip moderate for navigation and the occasional paddle through the muck, which is expected at low tide.
