Itinerary description
Capri Paddlecraft Park is a Collier County-run facility with lots of parking (maybe room for 50 cars), restrooms, picnic shelters, sidewalks, and a protected, easy launch into a shallow bay. There's a $4.00 launch fee for paddlecraft payable by credit card at a machine. If you launch in the dark, bring a flashlight.
The west end of the bay connects to a series of mangrove islands through many possible routes. This particular route heads west, then north through a series of channels and bays. It's a leisurely paddle if you don't get lost. (Don't get lost!) There's a large, occupied bald eagle's nest at the northern end of the northernmost lake.
This is an accessible area, and if you are not paying attention, it is easy to get misoriented without a GPS track or a laminated aerial. We hit the Eagle's nest about an hour or two before really low tide and were scrambling to get out as the tide was still dropping, and we were looking for deeper channels.
We've been to visit that nest a couple of times, and the eagle has always been there.
