Itinerary description
Nice, easy Atchafalaya Basin paddle. Launched from Bayou Benoit Landing, which is a free, large boat launch with a floating dock and two boat ramps. Parking is plentiful. No restroom facilities. Launched near the southern ramp because water edge was more sandy than other areas.
The basin water level is still real low, so not sure what area would look like at normal levels. Channel water depth is deep enough. All of the paddling outside of the channel, the water depth varied from 12" - 24". This was great as it prevented all motor boats from running where we paddled.
We did as much exploring as the floating aquatic vegetation allowed us, and we saw some great sights. Watch out for the Asian Carp! One hit a boat so hard it redirected it 90 degrees from its original track.
Return paddle, in the channel was more difficult as we had a head wind of about 5 knots.
