Itinerary description

The National Wildlife Refuge sits on the south side of US-41 and runs from Collier Seminole State Park about 5 miles to Port of the Islands. In that 5 mile stretch, there are four canoe trails headed south into the marshes. The trails are navigable only during the wet season or after heavy rains. Two trails, 1 and 3, are accessible from the roadside. Trail 4 is protected by a guardrail, and Trail 2 is from a 20-car parking lot at the "Marsh Trail."

Trail 1 is about 1.1 miles past the entrance to Corey Billie's Airboat tours, and if you get to the Marsh Trail parking lot, you've gone about 1,000 ft too far. The first part of the trail is well marked, but you had better pay attention after that first turn. So again, GPS, compass, aerial photos, and some trail marking systems is advisable. We made this loop counter-clockwise because the water is up due to this year's rains. The trail contains a few cuts that are hard to find, so zoom in on your GPS, and it does look the same in a lot of areas, so pay attention.

It was a short trip but slow going. Easy paddling, difficult navigating = moderate.
